The Turtle Creek Dairy farm in Loxahatchee is the love child of Jim Berke, a New Jersey native who learned about goat cheese in Europe and turned his appreciation for the product into a career. He started selling goat cheese commercially in 1988 and currently lists some of Florida’s finest hotels and restaurants as his customers. They include The Breakers in Palm Beach, The Boca Raton Hotel & Club, The Grand Floridian at Disney World and Bern’s Steak House in Tampa.
“There are many more, but they buy from my distributor and I don’t know who they are,” he says.
With luck, Jim’s cheese will be available soon at Mrs. Thoumy’s and Chelsea’s in Vero Beach. Currently, he is selling it directly to farmers’ markets in Boca Raton and Palm Beach, which he visits from time to time, distributing recipes and getting to know his customers.
