Come to practice at Windsor’s Equestrian Center on a Friday afternoon and, if you didn’t know better, you’d almost think polo was a matriarchy. Young girls, stable rats we’ll call them, are grooming and tacking up horses. Victoria Turon, the assistant polo manager, is wrapping a poultice around a handsome bay’s left pastern. Three lithe players, having just finished a hard-riding 7-minute chukker out on the field, take off their helmets, shake out their damp hair, and reveal themselves to be svelte blondes.
Well, it was bound to happen. You let women adopt cigars, and they’re sure to take over the sport of kings as well. There they go off again on fresh horses, full-hot pounding up and down the field.
