A half mile west of U.S.1, between 69th and 71st streets, lies the county’s oldest graveyard, the Winter Beach Cemetery. Established in 1908 as a “free” cemetery, it is the final resting place of many pioneers.
Among the unusual headstones are “Came to From Georgia by Covered Wagon in 1897” and “Southern by the Grace of God.” Frank Ayers, the discoverer of the Vero Man (see page 68), rests beside his wife here, and there is a headstone for Joseph Jones, of the Florida Light Artillery, who fought in the Civil War (above).
Holding true to its original charter of free plots for local residents, the cemetery has to depend on donations and volunteer help to maintain itself. In recent times the available resources have not been adequate to do the job, and sadly, the cemetery is now quite overgrown.
