Sometimes, when Walter Rowan gazes down from the bridge of the sleek, 154-foot Roxana, he still wonders how a young necktie salesman could have ended up as the captain of one of the most luxurious yachts ever built.
Rowan remembers that he was 24 and fresh out of Alabama when he realized that a career as a traveling salesman was not how he wanted to spend his life.
“Sure, I wanted to travel,” he says. “But not with a caseful of men’s fashions. Fortunately, I was still young enough to take a chance on my future.”
Rowan decided to take the gamble when he was visiting a friend in New Orleans. On an impulse, he signed up as a deckhand on a tugboat.
