Scratch the surface of the good life in Vero Beach – say, by spending a few extra minutes with the next guest you meet at a weekend party – and the discussion is likely to turn to more than golf, boats and great weather.  

That’s what happened when I met ex-Navy fighter pilot Michael Bagby.  Once a Hawaiian beachcomber and Colorado ski bum, he seemed at first blush to have all the earmarks of the classic bon vivant. After all, not everyone forsakes a career as an elite aviator in the prime of life to open an ice cream parlor in Honolulu.
