Denny Gordon has lived in Vero Beach for 25 years and for 20 of them she has arranged and organized the annual meeting of the American Cancer Society. Well, it’s not exactly a meeting; it’s really a “celebration of life” — more like an elegant cocktail party and buffet with a few remarks commemorating past members and welcoming newcomers. This year, the ACS 125 will be held on Monday, January 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Northern Trust Bank.
The unusual name for the meeting originated when the first gathering took place on January 25 (1-25) nearly two decades ago. Its mission was “to alleviate the ravages of and eventually obliterate this dreaded disease,” and Gordon recalls the early days when the membership numbered 40 and the party was held at private homes. Over the years, expansion moved the event to The Moorings clubhouse and then, three years ago, to the Northern Trust Bank, which this year extended its support for both food and beverages.
