Early in 1945, with World War II still raging, a young Navy midshipman named Berthold E. Schwarz arrived home on leave. Like many others of his generation, his education had been put on hold for the duration of the war. He was already a graduate of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and had begun studying at Dartmouth’s medical school with no thought of what branch of medicine he would pursue.
Then, on a chilly evening in mid-February — a day that would change his life — he was heading toward his home in Montclair, NJ, when his mind turned to his 19-year-old brother Eric, who was serving in Germany with Patton’s Third Army. Suddenly, Bert says, he quite literally sensed a horrifying scene taking place at his home.
