A New Deal For Downtown

Downtown Vero Beach is easy to spot but hard to define. For thousands of drivers a day, it’s the place where they gather speed heading west to the Indian River Mall or I-95. It’s the blocks with those skinny sidewalks, the glimpse of restored Mediterranean-style buildings, the place where the old picture show closed a generation ago.

The new Indian River County Courthouse, the library and a handful of historic churches are all part of what downtown enthusiasts consider their bailiwick. Yet the courthouse turns its back on the historic city core, and the attractive landscaping that surrounds these institutional landmarks links them more closely to neighboring residential districts than to the old commercial center.
