The Second Time Around

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many couples are thankful for the love of their lives. But some have been blessed twice. Vero Beach-based couples Sharon and Doug Howder and Carolyn and Joe Webber lost their beloved first spouses but found new mates in each other. Let’s take a look at their extraordinary stories.

The Final Link

When Consider The Cook opened in Vero Beach in October 2014, it was the final link in the trio of stores that owner Dina Clausen had dreamed of years earlier. The original store was founded in Cross River, New York in 1978 by Betsy Barnett and a group of her friends. Twenty years later, Dina became manager of that store and soon after, the sole owner. In 2000, she relocated the store to the Village Green in nearby Bedford, New York.

The Doctors' Doctor

For someone who has performed six demanding one to one-and-a-half hour surgeries today, Dr. Vipul Patel seems extremely chipper as he greets me outside his state-of-the art operating theatre on the fourth floor of Florida Hospital in the Disney-designed town of Celebration. It’s just after 3 p.m. and Patel, dressed in light green surgical scrubs and brown clogs, ushers me into a nearby conference room where he explains that he has one more surgery on today’s schedule – one of the more than 1,000 that he performs each year. “It’s good to take a break,” he says as we sit down. “I started operating at seven this morning.”
