Fields of ancient olive trees are everywhere as we cycle through the Costa degli Etruschi (Etruscan Coast) up to Casale Marittimo, a tiny village nestled between the sea and the mountains.
Tuscany offers so many riches and fruits of the land that our eyes and senses can be stimulated far beyond our preconceptions as tourists. So leave the tour bus or rented car behind and sign up for a cycling adventure. There is no better way to experience the countryside or visit a 15th-century hilltop village.
My wife Lindsay and I joined Vermont Bicycle Tours’ “Tuscan Tour” in May 2006 and “Tuscany by the Sea” in October 2007. Both tours began with three days in Florence and then six days of easy to challenging cycling through some of the prettiest countryside imaginable. Lunches and dinners were guilt-free and the Italians were happy to share the fruits of their land with us while we sipped the best wines and dipped bread in fresh-pressed olive oil.
