Angela* was alone and afraid. A teenage runaway, she’d been on her own for a month. Her money was gone; so was her food. That’s when she saw the yellow and black sign in a store window and she knew she didn’t need to be afraid any more.
The sign that caught Angela’s eye was the highly visible “Safe Place” logo, identifying that business as being part of a larger support system for troubled youth seeking help. Project Safe Place, one of several services provided by the Children’s Home Society (CHS), is a nationally acclaimed prevention and outreach program designed to reach young people at risk or in crisis. Through it, local businesses, schools, youth-service agencies and volunteers work together to provide a network of temporary safe havens where professional counseling, and, if needed, temporary shelter is available.
