The following essays were selected from among the writings of twenty-five young convicted felons who participated in the Teen Writers Workshop-Behind Bars, a program held in February with St. Petersburg Times editorial writer Bill Maxwell at the Indian River Correctional Institution in Vero Beach. Located in the southwestern part of the county, the state facility houses up to 391 male youthful offenders aged 14 to 18 who have been adjudicated as adults.
During the workshop, which was part of a program of The Laura Riding Jackson Foundation, Inc. and is sponsored by College Application Consultants, Maxwell asked the inmates to write their own version of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Here are four of those dreams.
