This is a story about the Sea Hearts, an extraordinary women’s senior tennis team from Vero Beach. It’s about their commitment, competitive play and road to victory in 2002. But the story really begins with a few words about the team’s well-chosen namesake: the intrepid sea heart. A seed from a tropical vine that lives in the canopy of the Costa Rican rainforest, the sea heart resembles a polished, wooden heart that can fit in the palm of one’s hand. When heavy rains wash the sea heart from its vine into a nearby river, the sea heart makes its way to the ocean, where it embarks on a voyage that can last months or even years. Eventually, the sea heart might be washed ashore on a distant beach. Because of its lengthy and fortuitous journey, the sea heart is prized by beachcombers as a good luck charm or protective amulet.
