Transition and Trust
The Hill Group’s values keep the company strong from top to bottom and its construction projects strong from bottom to top
It’s official. Chris Hill is now president of The Hill Group, the firm his father, Toby, founded in 1984. With Toby assuming the position of vice president of the company known for building high-end custom homes on the Treasure Coast, the transition plan detailing the father and son’s exchanging of roles and responsibilities has become a fait accompli.
“My dad and I have always had a close relationship, and we mutually agreed to become partners before I joined The Hill Group,” says Chris, who came on board in 2014 after working in the construction industry for over 10 years.
“The beauty behind the transition plan was that we were aligned from the start, having the same concepts and vision. I understood I had more to learn, and it was an unbelievable opportunity to tap into my dad’s vast experience. He understood my mission and trusted me to earn the respect of my co-workers, subcontractors and the community at large. Having trust as the foundation of the future transition was key for both of us.”
Chris was a month old when his parents moved to Vero Beach 40 years ago. Toby, armed with a Bachelor of Building Construction degree from the University of Florida and project management experience, joined the commercial construction firm of William H. Hensick & Sons. After four years, he decided to focus on the growing high-end residential market and form his own company, and thus The Hill Group was born.
Even though Chris worked for his father’s firm during high school and college summer breaks, the furthest thing from his future plans was working in the construction industry.
