What do you do if you’re house hunting and find one that doesn’t quite suit your lifestyle, but whose property and location are exactly what you’ve been looking for? For a couple from the Northeast, the answer was to call on a team of local professionals to make their vision a reality. A year later a newly transformed home reflects the couple’s personalities, interests and experiences thanks to the collaboration of builder Carl Lachnitt, architect Greg Anderson, and interior designer Leah Muller.

The homeowners began the challenging restructuring process by talking with Lachnitt, the owner of CAL Builders Inc. “They had seen other projects we’d done in John’s Island and asked if I was interested in bidding on their job. I was,” he says, recalling the conversation that ended with a handshake. “I suggested they get in touch with Greg and Leah. The three of us have teamed up on other custom and spec homes before, and we work very well together.”

Greg Anderson of Gregory Anderson Architecture P.A. wasn’t the only architect the couple met with; but after spending time with him, he was the one they chose. “So much of my business has to do with personalities, how well people relate to one another. This kind of work can be emotional and very stressful. It’s important that people feel comfortable with one another, and we did,” says Anderson, who emphasizes the need to establish clear goals. “You have to know what it is you’re trying to accomplish. If the program isn’t defined, then it’s like a moving target. In this case the clients loved the house site and had a very clear vision of what they wanted.”
