Abused. Abandoned. Alone. For most of us it’s hard to believe there are children in this country, in our own state and county, who don’t receive the attention, care and love they deserve. Yet it’s true. Each year in Florida, thousands of neglected children become the subject of judicial proceedings. Their voices often go unheeded, their best interests overlooked in the complex and overburdened adversarial process.

For many, hope for a positive future lies in the hands of a Guardian ad Litem, citizens who volunteer to become part of a court program, acting in the best interests of an assigned child. They become the special advocate, the spokesperson for the child before the court, the social service agencies and the community; it’s tough, time-consuming work, yet for someone like Tim Cheney it’s a priority.
