Americans, as a rule, are a generous lot, outranking every other country in the world on the giving front. The outpouring is greater still in Vero Beach, the reported capital of retired corporate wealth. Beyond buying bigger houses and better cars, all that money tends to procure a sense of responsibility to the community at large and especially the less fortunate of its citizenry.

Altruistic giving is why Vero Beach has a top-ranked Heart Center, a state-of-the-art emergency room, a regionally producing professional theatre, an acclaimed teaching art museum, and a renowned as well as debt-free private school that collectively help attract bright young physicians and accomplished artists and teachers here. It is also why we have an award-winning Habitat for Humanity affiliate and why disadvantaged children go home from school on Fridays with food as well as textbooks in their backpacks
