The assassin of two policemen marched his 14-year-old hostage, pointing a gun to his head, across a snow-covered driveway to his getaway car. Police and FBI agents faced the pair, their guns drawn, while one lone sharpshooter crouched on the nearby rooftop, his magnum aimed at the gunman. “If I shoot, the bullet will go through him and hit the boy. I can’t do it,” he thought. Then the boy slipped on the ice and in the split second that he started to fall away, the agent fired. It was a good hit.

That Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, now retired after 25 years, is Joe Del Campo of Vero Beach. He lives a relatively quiet life; and instead of rescuing hostages, he rescues Yorkshire terriers along with his life partner Linda Worsham.

Well, maybe a “quiet life” is not quite accurate. Joe recently returned from 39 grueling days on a remote island off Cambodia where he and 17 others starred in the CBS reality show, “Survivor.” The 72-year-old is only the second septuagenarian to compete in the show in its 16-year history. As of this writing, the winner has not been announced. Joe and Linda will find out who was chosen the Sole Survivor and won the $1 million prize in Los Angeles on May 18.
