Cheers On Cardinal

Manager Deirdre Williams has worked at Casey’s for over 20 years and remembers everyone's name and usually their order, too.

Sitting down with Casey Steil, owner of Casey’s Place on the corner of Azalea and Cardinal Drive, it’s easy to see why people say this is one of the friendliest places in town. Affable, easygoing and very much a people person, Steil is happy to chat about his 36 years as owner of this Vero Beach landmark.

Located just one block from the glitz and glamour of Ocean Drive, Steil’s back-to-basics eatery has a simple formula for success: a window for placing and picking up orders, an outdoor seating area replete with cheerful umbrellas and picnic tables, and a location close to the beach, shops and hotels. The popularity of the restaurant points to a nostalgic appreciation for food that satisfies the primal gustatory senses — a craving that has kept Steil in business year after year.

The menu reads like the most basic of all-American menus: hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese fries and homemade chili along with soups, sandwiches and salads. And even though it has been voted “Best Burger” in town for years in a row, you won’t find a gussied-up Foie gras and truffle-stuffed bistro burger à la Daniel Boulud at this eatery.  This is a place for the burger and hot dog purist — a no-nonsense, honest-to-goodness, ketchup and mustard with pickles kind of place.
