An Exotic Country Cottage With Far East Flavor

A treasured mantel panel hangs over the door to the walk-in pantry where an antique dowry chest on wheels serves as storage and a workstation. The antique cabinet houses Jeed’s china and serving pieces.

It’s been said that everyone has a story to tell and Josh and Jeed Cooks’ tale has all the makings of a do-it-yourself best seller. After months spent house hunting and not finding anything they cared for or could afford, the couple opted to purchase a vacant lot and build the kind of house they wanted.

“We liked this part of town, so we kept driving around. One day we saw this lot with all the original growth and a small shed in the back. It was perfect,” says Josh. “Jeed and I had decided to be the owner-builder, and we took our time designing it. Our intention was to create an Asian country cottage, using as many antique and authentic architectural elements as possible. We wanted a small house that had a big feel, with plenty of details in every line of sight.”

With land in hand, it was time to put their ideas on paper. “We had to be realistic because we had a small budget, so we said let’s just do a simple plan – rooms with high ceilings, all opening to a courtyard,” Jeed adds.
