Equation For Excellence
Dedicated teachers and students have created an award-winning math team.
Teacher and coach Carol Selph conducts an afternoon math team study session in her classroom at Vero Beach High School. Meetings and after-school practice form the backbone of the team’s success at competitions.
When the 2:05 p.m. bell rings at Vero Beach High School, students swarm to cars, buses, club meetings and sports activities. For one club, meeting in two different buildings, the classrooms where they gather have walls filled with trophies, photographs and scrapbooks. This club requires strenuous hours of practice, extensive out-of-classroom work and regular participation in state and national competitions.
A casual observer might imagine that such dedication is prompted by a popular sport such as football, or perhaps the yearbook or school newspaper, but this is not the case. This particular club is for students who have a passion for math — algebra, pre-calculus, calculus and geometry. Its members belong to one of the high school’s most celebrated and successful endeavors, the Vero Beach High School Math Team.
The accomplishments of the math team have long been a source of pride and wonder at VBHS. Few schools anywhere can boast a team that is so outstanding year after year.
