A Most Unusual Print Shop

The trustees in the Sheriff Office’s print shop provide quality printing of a variety of items including certificates, victim assistance brochures, corrections division monthly statistics, emergency contact information for the jail and items for nonprofit agencies.

It may be the county’s best-kept secret. For sure, it’s one of Sheriff Deryl Loar’s smartest decisions since his 2009 election. And while it’s the only one of its kind in the entire state, practically nobody knows it exists. Just what is it? It’s the print shop at the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Housed in the jail’s former visitation center, an extraordinary amount of work is accomplished in this relatively small space, benefiting both the Sheriff’s Office and the community. Working together, Sheriff Loar and Sherrie Matthews, a longtime employee, have created a state-of-the-art print shop that could serve as a template for similar agencies across the country.

It all began with Loar’s vision of what a print shop could do. With a lifetime of experience in law enforcement, Sherrie was quick to recognize the possibilities. “My father worked in the prison system and my mother was a school teacher,” she says. “There were two things I swore I’d never do: teach school or serve in law enforcement. I planned on being in the medical profession.”
