The Art of Elegant Eggs
Vero Beach dental hygienist Sali Petri moonlights as an egg artist. Though they're not quite Faberge, her creations require a dexterity that makes teeth cleaning look like a breeze.
What’s bigger than a kiwi and smaller than an ostrich, doesn’t fly and probably doesn’t stick its head in the sand? An emu. Nearly six feet tall and weighing up to 120 pounds, this is a mighty big bird. Not surprisingly, its eggs are also enormous.
What is surprising is that these eggs provide an exquisite easel for the artwork of a Vero Beach dental hygienist named Sali Petri. She makes objets d’art - lamps, boxes, clocks, music boxes, Christmas ornaments and handbags. It’s not quite a hobby, not quite a business, neither a craft nor a fashion creation. Although Sali does create elegant purses, they’re not your run-of-the-mill accessory. Prices can run to $1,200, and some pieces just are not for sale. It is art, creative and demanding and truly amazing.
