After years of diving into underwater caves, putting a bat through its paces and measuring a Papa bear’s claws, Kristin Gordon Seiz’s claim to be an adventurer is no longer in question. So it made perfect sense that when she and her husband, TV commercial director Bill Seiz, were married 11 years ago, they would hold their wedding reception at the Explorers Club in New York.

This building, located at 70th Street between Madison and Park, is no socialite’s brownstone. It’s the headquarters of an organization founded by Teddy Roosevelt in 1904 to support scientific research and, let’s admit it, to promote wild and woolly adventure.

The club’s honorary president is Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary, the latest in a long line of distinguished presidents that includes polar explorer Admiral Robert Byrd.
