In January 1993, I had the good fortune to move to Vero Beach and the better fortune to move into a home across the street from Betty Reed, another relative newcomer.

Over the years, many people had the opportunity to personally experience and enjoy this human dynamo; many others have benefited from
the fruits of her labors with the cultural and other charitable organizations in town.

Betty’s dedication, leadership ability, organizational skills, vision, creativity and honesty made an indelible impression on everyone she touched. The Vero Beach Museum of Art (formerly the Center for the Arts), the Cultural Council of Indian River County and the Community Church are only a few of the organizations in which she had a leadership role. Not many people knew she was also a caring mentor, supporter and attendee of many diverse fund-raising events and causes. She was committed to broadening the cultural education of children and, with her husband Bob, sponsored the Children’s Art Festival each year at the museum. As a matter of fact, Betty’s State of the Arts license plate reads IRC ARTS, and proceeds from the sale of this plate go to support programs of the Cultural Council of Indian River County.
