A New Life For Nancy

Today, Nancy Hertel casts a larger shadow than the gaunt and listless woman who reluctantly arrived on the steps of the Women’s Refuge of Vero Beach four years ago. There is more to her in every sense of the word: more hope, more confidence, more joy and — even at her current 110 pounds — considerably more Nancy.

Like the women before her who had come to the refuge in need of healing, Nancy found balm for her wounds, and the medicine was largely spiritual.

She also arrived with an assortment of physical problems that a determined band of doctors set out to address one by one: first the crooked teeth, then the marked overbite, and finally the bushy brows and the large, over-projecting nose. In total, four Vero Beach physicians cosmetically blessed Nancy with at least $50,000 worth of free dental work and facial surgeries that gave her a beautiful new look to match her inner transformation.
