A Special Place That Feels Like Home

White indoor-outdoor fabric on sofas and chairs, a canvas-colored area rug, and a whitewashed wood coffee table keep the living room light and bright while vibrant accent pillows and sky-blue gourd lamps add pops of color.

It’s often been said that a house is a place, but a home is a feeling. Thanks largely to some pretty amazing synergy with their talented renovation team, New Yorkers Sandy and Mike ended up with a Vero Beach residence that is not only a visually stunning place, but a warm, inviting one that’s sure to make anyone who walks through the door feel welcome.

Along with their two children, Sandy and Mike had been coming to Vero Beach for years – vacationing, visiting old friends and making new ones – when they decided about three years ago that they wanted their own home in the area. “It had become a place that felt increasingly comfortable to us,” says Mike. Sandy adds, “We wanted a home where we could spend as much time as possible with family and friends and where Mike and I could retire someday.”

They began looking for the right property; and, knowing that a renovation might eventually be in order, they enlisted the advice of general contractor and Cal Builders Inc. owner Carl Lachnitt, who had been recommended to them by a friend. A particularly cloudy spring break trip that put the damper on outdoor fun drove them to spend extra time with realtors, doubling down their search, but they struck out and returned to New York still not having found the perfect place.

But then it happened, Sandy explains. “I got a call in New York that another house was new on the market. A friend went and looked at it for me and said, ‘I think you’d better come and have a look at this one.’ I did, and I immediately told Mike, ‘This is the house.’”
