Since March 1, the five full fields have hosted over 1,200 games and practices for high school and college baseball teams from all over the U.S. The teams spend a week in Vero Beach for their spring baseball trip and occupy the fields day and night.
Can a place be both new and historic, both young and old, both blooming and deeply rooted? For the 80 acres that make up the sports complex now known as Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, the answer is yes.
In 1948 Dodgertown became the springtime home for the Brooklyn Dodgers and then for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958. When the team eventually decamped for its new Arizona training complex, Dodgertown took a deep breath, a short hibernation, and then another springtime came. Put in terms that would be at home shouted across a baseball field, vice president and long-time complex executive Craig Callan says, “Hey. We’re back.”
