A Beach Club For The 21st Century

Opposite: Tom Cook and his wife were vacationing at a resort that had an illusion pool. Cook, a member of the facilities committee, loved the look so much that when he returned to John’s Island he told others about it. As a result, the initial clubhouse pool design was changed and the illusion pool with its graceful arcs and rimless edge became an immediate hit.

The John’s Island community has a new beach club and it’s a beauty. Laura McDermott calls it a tropical paradise, Tom Slater says it’s spectacular, and for Tom Cook the word magnificent comes to mind.

These three should know. McDermott chaired the design committee and co-chaired the facilities committee with Cook, working with architects, construction crews and interior designers. As president of the John’s Island Club, Slater kept everyone informed with regular updates, pictures on the club website, letters to the membership and discussions at membership meetings. When the beach club officially opened in November, members were able to see first hand what had been visually and verbally described to them, and they’ve been celebrating ever since.

It’s no wonder. From the minute you walk through the double mahogany doors and see the shimmering waters of the Atlantic straight ahead, you feel as though you’ve been transported to a magical island. Palm trees sway in sea-scented breezes, and an illusion pool beckons, as does the fireplace in the outdoor living room, especially on a nippy night.
