Falling into Place

In the morning, Foley can often be found sipping coffee on the patio watching the latest golf news while listening to the sounds of the pool waterfall.

Meet Brian Foley, Westchester County native, recently retired attorney and major golf enthusiast, a man who had no desire to live in the Sunshine State. Never. Ever. Then his sister and her husband bought a condominium in Vero Beach and he decided to pay them a visit.

“I was amazed at what I found here. Vero was different from anything I had imagined Florida was like,” Foley says with a smile as he recalls the change in thinking that led him to purchase a nearby condo for their mother, then in her 80s and happily living in the family home surrounded by all her favorite things.

“In order to get her to even consider leaving New York and moving down here, I had to come up with a clever idea, so I called and said ‘Mom, I did the dumbest thing. I bought this place and really need your help,’” says Foley, playing the I-don’t-know-what-to-do-now-card. “My plan was that once I got Mom down here she would stay, and later on I would look for a place of my own.”

His plan worked. Mom fell in love with the condo and on a recommendation from his sister, Foley contacted Deb Daly and Stevie Cappelen, owners of Decorative Arts Designs. While the partners discussed decor possibilities with his mother, Foley soaked in the surroundings, hoping one day he, too, would be calling Vero home. Until then, he would continue as general counsel for a privately owned company well known for its skin care and anti-aging products.
