The rings of modern brides are a far cry from the bands of braided grasses worn by Ancient Egyptian brides, a tradition thought to be the historical basis for today’s wedding rings.
 
Gradually, the braided grasses were replaced by more substantial materials like leather and bone, then metals. In the Victorian Era, gold and diamonds began to be used. Whether made of grasses, iron or gold, the symbolic meanings of the engagement and wedding rings remain the same. The engagement ring signifies a promise to marry; the wedding ring signifies commitment and fidelity for a lifetime.
