Contributing to IRMC’s reputation as one of the top heart surgery programs in America, as rated by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, are cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Mark Malias, cardiologist Dr. Seth Baker, and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery Services Dr. Cary Stowe.
It seems like yesterday that people were talking about the possibility of Indian River Medical Center partnering with the Duke University Health System to establish a heart center that would rival the best heart hospitals in Florida as well as the country. Believers cheered, doubters scoffed.
The believers won out as ground was broken, walls went up and a ribbon-cutting ceremony five years ago marked the beginning of IRMC’s ability to provide a critical community need for exceptional, comprehensive cardiac care. Mission accomplished.
In March the 1,000th heart surgery was performed in The Heart Center. Much of the credit goes to the leaders of IRMC and Duke University Health System who had the vision – and courage – to create a new model for heart care based on research, evidence-based practice, partnering and a shared commitment to clinical excellence. Not to be forgotten are the community leaders who came forward to make sure The Heart Center became a reality.
