Not Just Oldies

Jim Schwiering stands beside his wife Jane’s 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SE. The astute car aficionado considers it an investment. “The proper car in the right condition is an investment that has historically gone up in value,” Jim points out.

As soon as Jim Schwiering heard that Quail Valley was going to have a member car show, he began polishing the already gleaming hood of the 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SE he purchased last year. A surprise birthday present for his wife Jane, it didn’t take long before the silver with red leather interior beauty became Jim’s “baby.”

“I found it in Cincinnati through a friend who’s in the old car business up there. It had about 120,000 miles on it, and he’d been doing the service on it. We knew the history of the car, so I knew it was in excellent condition,” Jim enthusiastically explains. “It was a complete surprise. Jane had no idea until the car came off the truck and she saw it for the first time.”

Jane also had no idea that a casual remark she had made earlier would send Jim and sons Jonathan and Jordan on a hush-hush hunt for the coveted 1967 model. “I once said it was the only old Mercedes I would ever like, and they took it as Gospel.”

They did indeed, and entering “Jane’s car” in Quail Valley’s inaugural car event on April 17 was a no-brainer. There, on the grounds of the Quail Valley River Club, it joined Porches, Bentleys, Buick Roadsters, a Jaguar and a McLaren. The show drew collectors and the curious, the young, old, and in between, just as Martha Redner, director of Quail Valley Charities and lifelong automobile enthusiast, had envisioned.
