Relatively few of these works of art have been on public display, and approximately 400 have a permanent home at the Kennedy Space Center where they are tucked away in its museum-like storage facility. Fortunately for us, the Vero Beach Museum of Art presents some 70 selected pieces from the collection in a summer exhibition entitled “Out of this World: The Art and Artists of NASA.”

Curator Jay Williams handpicked each piece for the exhibition and admits it was a tough choice. In terms of subject matter, NASA had provided artists entrée to many of the restricted areas not only at Cape Canaveral but also at the Johnston Space Center in Houston, Edwards Air Force Base in California, the Canary Islands tracking station off the coast of Africa and even – when relations were better – to Russia’s launch sites. Artists such as Andy Warhol, Mitchell Jamieson, Paul Calle, Annie Leibovitz, Norman Rockwell, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, William Wegman, Jamie Wyeth and others contributed to this unique collection of American art.
