The new year is a time for fresh starts. Of course, the measure of newness, just like time, is relative. How about when Vero Beach was new? While some of you who have just moved to our city are experiencing that adventurous joy of discovery, others think of the newness of Vero Beach from a completely different perspective.

Reflecting on stories he heard growing up about a “brand-new” Vero Beach, Marvin Carter sits back in his office chair at the 101-year-old engineering firm of Carter & Associates, located in the heart of downtown. "I wasn’t even a gleam in anyone’s eye yet," he says, laughing.
