On a patch of green earth near the outskirts of town, there’s a magical preschool known as Maitland Farm where for the past 35 years children have been lovingly nurtured and surrounded by nature.

Situated on five acres off Fifth Street Southwest, the two-building schoolhouse is ensconced by a barnyard replete with a calf, chickens, goats, rabbits and a donkey, vegetable gardens, and a playground that requires a truckload of sand every year to replenish what the children take home in their shoes.

Founded in 1978, Maitland Farm Preschool has played an integral role in the history of thousands of local residents and has impacted the way early childhood education is taught in Indian River County.
